When Should You Book Your 2026/2027 Winter Holiday and Why Is It Worth Planning Ahead?

1 September 2026

When to book a winter holiday? There is no single answer that applies to every trip. A holiday may still be available just a few weeks before departure, but availability only tells part of the story.

The hotel you want may still have rooms, but not the right configuration for your family. A flight may be available, but its schedule could turn a five-night stay into just four usable days. And in Lapland, the Alps or during peak periods such as Christmas and New Year, certain experiences follow their own availability calendar.

That is why, at ActivTours®, we start designing some winter journeys as early as September. Not to rush the booking, but to give ourselves enough time to compare the options and make the right choices.

The advantage of planning ahead is not the promise of the lowest price. It is the freedom to design your holiday with fewer compromises.

When should you actually book a winter holiday?

The right time depends on when you want to travel, your destination, the type of holiday you have in mind and how specific your preferences are.

Christmas and New Year come with fixed dates and concentrate demand within a relatively short period. If you have a particular hotel, room category or festive programme in mind, it is worth starting the selection process several months in advance. This gives you a better chance of finding the option that best suits your plans.

Lapland and journeys across Northern Europe have another particularity. Some of the experiences that define the trip have limited capacity. These include husky safaris, reindeer activities, excursions and certain types of accommodation.

For ski holidays, the resort, access to the slopes, school holiday periods, room configurations and the services you need all matter. A winter city break or a wellness escape will generally allow for greater flexibility.

A useful rule is this: the more specific your dates and preferences are, the more valuable advance planning becomes.

Why September is not too early for winter 2026/2027

In September, you do not need to know the name of your hotel or your flight number. You simply need to start with the right questions.

Would you like to spend Christmas with your family or travel after the festive period? Are you looking to ski every day, or would you prefer a mountain hotel where the spa, gastronomy and time together matter just as much? Do you want snow, or perhaps a few days of sunshine in the middle of winter?

Starting to plan does not mean rushing to book.

September can be the time to compare two destinations, understand the differences between hotels, look at flight connections and decide which experiences deserve a place in your journey.

For a simple, flexible holiday, the decision can come later. For fixed dates or trips involving several elements that need to work together, additional planning time gives you more room to make better choices.

What do you gain by starting early? Freedom of choice

In travel, “early booking” is often associated with price. For a tailor-made holiday, however, there is a more important advantage: the ability to choose the elements that work well together.

The hotel is a good example. Two properties with the same star rating can deliver completely different experiences. In the mountains, location can mean easy access to the ski lifts or daily transfers that unnecessarily complicate your holiday.

The room matters just as much. For a family, the difference between two separate rooms, connecting rooms and a family suite can change the comfort of the entire stay.

Then there are the flights. The lowest fare is not always the right choice if it involves an inconvenient connection or departure times that take away a significant part of your holiday.

And once you arrive, there are the experiences: ski lessons, restaurants, spa treatments, private transfers, children’s activities or excursions available only on certain days.

The right hotel does more than occupy a place in your itinerary. It helps the entire journey work better.

“Available” does not always mean “right for you”

Booking platforms are very efficient at answering the question “what is available?”. For a tailor-made holiday, however, there is another question to consider: which option actually suits the people who will be travelling?

On a ski holiday, for example, we look beyond the hotel and the number of kilometres of slopes. We consider where the lifts and pistes suitable for each skier’s ability are located, how long it takes to reach them in the morning and what someone who does not ski can enjoy in the same area.

A ski-in/ski-out hotel can be an excellent choice for a couple who want to spend the entire day on the slopes, yet less suitable for a family where only some members ski.

Even the length of the stay needs context. Five nights with well-chosen flights can give you more meaningful time at your destination than six nights with inconvenient connections.

A well-planned holiday is not the sum of all the services available. It is the right combination of them.

This is where the value of an ActivTours® Travel Concierge begins: before the booking itself, through careful selection and context.

What kind of winter do you want?

Before choosing the destination, there is a more important decision to make: what role do you want winter to play in your journey?

It could mean skiing and the mountains, in the Alps or the Dolomites, where the right resort should match your skiing ability, who you are travelling with and what each person wants from their time there. And if the mountains also mean spa time, gastronomy and a slower pace for you, discover why the Dolomites are such a compelling destination for a wellness holiday.

It could mean Northern Europe, with Lapland, Arctic landscapes and experiences shaped around the snow.

It could be Christmas in a European city, where gastronomy, culture and the atmosphere of the season become the reasons for travelling.

Or it could be exactly the opposite: winter sun, in a destination chosen for its climate, sea and an entirely different pace of life.

Within the AURORA universe, ActivTours® starts with how you want to experience the season, rather than with a predetermined list of hotels.

How ActivTours® designs an AURORA winter holiday

At ActivTours®, a winter proposal begins with the period when you can travel, the number of days you have, who is travelling and how you want the holiday to feel.

From there, we consider the destinations, transport, hotels, room types and experiences that can come together in a coherent itinerary.

Sometimes this means recommending a different resort from the one you originally had in mind. At other times, it means choosing a better-located hotel over a more famous one, or leaving out an activity so that the journey has a better pace.

More experiences do not automatically make for a better journey.

Curation means knowing what deserves to be included — and what is better left for a future trip.

Frequently asked questions about booking winter holidays

How far in advance should I book a winter holiday?

It depends on the destination, travel period and your preferences. Christmas, New Year, Lapland and certain ski holidays are worth considering several months in advance, particularly when your dates are fixed or you have specific requirements for the hotel and room.

Is September too early to plan a winter holiday?

No. For the 2026/2027 season, September is a good time to begin exploring your options, especially for travel during periods of high demand. Planning ahead, however, does not mean rushing into the first available option.

Is it cheaper to book early?

There is no guarantee. Hotel and transport prices are dynamic. The main advantage of planning ahead is having access to more options and the ability to design your holiday with fewer compromises.

Can I request a proposal if I have not chosen my destination yet?

Yes. Your preferred travel period, number of days, who is travelling, the experiences that matter to you and an indicative budget are enough to get started. The destination itself can be part of the recommendation made by your ActivTours® Consultant.

Winter 2026/2027 can start with a conversation

Not every winter holiday needs to be booked many months in advance. But when the hotel, room, dates, flights and particular experiences matter, it is worth starting the selection process before important choices turn into compromises.

You do not need to have chosen your destination yet.

Tell us when you would like to travel, how many days you have, who is travelling, what matters most to you and your indicative budget. From there, an ActivTours® Consultant can compare the destinations, hotels and experiences worth considering for winter 2026/2027.
